Puerto Plata is the birthplace of tourism in the Dominican Republic. Its spectacular, sprawling landscape combines sea, mountains, lush valleys, rivers, and a multitude of beaches. Its fertile soil grows cacao and coffee trees, while underneath rests the world’s clearest amber. We have your time in Dominican Republic pretty jam packed but for those of you staying a while longer here's a small sampling of the things you can do in the area.

Eat & Drink

There are endless amounts of options and all different types of cuisines that you’ll find in and throughout the North Coast. Cabarete is best known for its nightlife. You’ll find a strip of restaurants, bars & clubs all along the shoreline. I’ve selected some of my favorite options for you to check out:

FOOD

ITALIAN: Ceiba Cafe & Pizzeria, Pomodoro + Tuva

VEGAN: Cabarete Coffee Company, Fresh Fresh Cafe Cabarete + The Honey Company

BREAKFAST: Vagamundo Coffee & Waffles (My absolute favorite!!)

HEALTHY: Gordito’s Fresh Mex

NIGHTLIFE

Cabarete by night is just as intense as it is by day. The multitude of bars and small clubs lining the beach fill up with barefoot or sandal-clad travelers and locals enjoying happy hours, music, and dancing. You’ll find two-story nightclubs with theme music nights, as well as cozy sofas directly on the beach to spend a calmer night amid the bouncing party crowd.

The one I am most familiar with is:

Lax Ojo Cabarete

Play

Within the Village we reserved for the wedding there are a multitude of things to do. For those who want to feel like a kid again there is a waterpark on the property, several pools (aside from your own private pool at your Villa) and Restaurants. The day after the wedding we will be going to the onsite Lagoon to fish our dinner! They will prepare it right in front of you just the way you like it!

Cabarete is one of the original kitesurfing meccas; people have been making the pilgrimage to this fantastic spot in the Dominican Republic for years. The wind blows all year consistently round, and the waves roll in during the winter.

You can book private kite surfing lessons or have the staff at the resort make arrangements for you.

There are also Scuba Diving & Snorkeling Tours for those who want an under water adventure!

Not a fan of water? No problem! You can schedule an exciting Amber Cove Zip lining & Horse Back riding adventure!

CIGUAPA FALLS

Take the waterfall experience up a notch at Ciguapa–counting a total of six falls and twelve jumps of up to 10 meters (30 feet) high, during a two-hour river expedition. The journey includes a hike through thick jungle before beginning this water-filled expedition.

CUEVAS DE LAS GOLONDRINAS

Tucked along the scraggly Atlantic coastline of Río San Juan, swim in the calm natural pool surrounding the cave or view its rock composition from ceiling to floor while you float on crystal clear turquoise waters

EL CHOCO NATIONAL PARK + CUEVAS DE CABARETE

El Choco National Park offers a world of nature for hikes, mountain biking, swimming in fresh water lagoons, and cave exploration. Stretching 78 square kilometers (30 square miles), a handful of hiking trails take you through thick tropical forest along cacao and coffee trees, and into caves dating back millions of years.

MONKEY JUNGLE

Home to squirrel capuchin monkeys, a seven-station zip line, a botanical garden, and an ancient Taino cave you can descend into 18 meters (60 feet) below ground. The monkeys mingle with visitors, posing for photos, and climbing on your shoulders if you choose.

FUN CITY

When it’s time for a beach break, head over to Fun City, where you’ll face some fierce competition on one of three go-kart tracks with varying speeds and challenges. Whether adult or child, there’s a ton of fun guaranteed!

Explore

27 Charcos

Twenty Seven Waterfalls of Rio Damajagua and the best adventure tourism site in the Dominican Republic! Nestled in the rolling hills of the Northern Corridor mountain range and behind the long stalks of sugar cane lays a treasure you won't find anywhere else in the world. Mother Nature has crafted twenty-seven awe-inspiring pools, etched out of limestone, for your enjoyment.

TELEFERICO PUERTO PLATA CABLE CAR

No visit to Puerto Plata is complete without riding the teleférico–the only complete cable car ride you’ll find in the whole Caribbean region, operating continuously since 1975. A breathtaking 10-minute ride takes you soaring in one of two cable cars 800 meters (2,625 feet) above Puerto Plata’s magical landscape–from the sea on your north to the lush, verdant plains that eventually lead you to the other end of the cable, at Mount Isabel de Torres. Explore the nature reserve and botanical gardens, enjoying the ride back down by cable car once more before heading out!

BRUGAL RUM DISTILLERY

The largest producer of traditionally made rum in the DR since 1888 offers tours of the distillery, including rum tasting and the chance of purchasing well-priced premium rums.

CABARETE COFFEE COMPANY

Based in Cabarete, this “organic, shade grown, hand-picked, fair trade” coffee provider takes you on a tour of multiple coffee farms approximately two hours away, where it sources its coffee beans. You’ll get to roast, grind, and brew your own cup.

FORTALEZA SAN FELIPE

One of the most important colonial military structures in the Caribbean turned museum, built by Spaniards in the 16th century to defend the DR’s north coast from pirates. Touring the fort reveals the original canons facing the Atlantic, ancient weapons, and numerous hidden chambers.

LAGUNA DUDU

Laguna Dudú’s series of turquoise, freshwater lagoons surrounded with caves and lush forest will keep you swimming all day long. Rent a kayak to navigate the waters, explore one of the caves on foot, or brave the makeshift zipline at your own risk.

LAGUNA GRI-GRI

One of the DR’s major bird sanctuaries, set along a peaceful lagoon flanked by thick mangroves. Boat rides take you along this mystical lagoon daily, though sunset is the best time to see egrets, and vultures soaring and chirping loudly above the mangroves as you pass through narrow channels.
